Portugal Ranks in Sixth Position in the Global Digital Nomad Report 2025

Portugal ranks sixth in the 2025 Global Digital Nomad Report by Global Citizen Solutions’ Global Intelligence Unit (GIU). This report analyzes 64 countries across six different dimensions: Quality of life, tax optimization, procedure, citizenship and mobility, economics, and tech and innovation.

The massive rise in the number of digital nomads working abroad has led to the development of this index, providing a comprehensive and holistic rundown of the best countries in the world to work remotely in 2025.

According to the 2025 study by Global Citizen Solutions’ GIU, below are the top ten countries to work remotely.

Methodology

The Global Digital Nomad Report 2025 maps the shift in remote working through a comprehensive, data-led approach.

64 countries were mapped across six dimensions:

1. Procedure
2. Citizenship & mobility
3. Tax optimization
4. Economics
5. Quality of life
6. Tech and innovation

The approach by the GIU used both official sources, respected public datasets, and weighted them by real decision drivers, such as internet speed, visa clarity, costs, tax treatment, innovation capacity, and proficiency in English.

This ensured that the overall scores were accurate and produced a clear picture of which countries digital nomads excelled in and, more importantly, why.

Portugal Ranks in Sixth Position

Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa (D8) Visa launched in October 2022, more than 2,610 individuals have relocated to Portugal through this residency option.

Portugal excelled in the citizenship and mobility index (2nd) and, overall, performed well in all metrics.

Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa

The D8 Visa in Portugal allows individuals to move to Portugal, provided they earn four times the Portuguese minimum wage, currently at €3,847.

There are two options for the Digital Nomad Visa:

1. Temporary Stay Visa (up to 1 year): This option allows for a year of stay with potential for renewals.
2. Long-Term Residency Visa (initial 4 months, renewable: This visa allows for a two-year residence permit upon arrival, which can be renewed for up to 5 years, leading to permanent residency.
