Ericeira is a globally renowned UNESCO World Surfing Reserve, just one of two in Europe (the other being North Devon in the UK). Keen surfers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to the best beaches to craft their skills, with some choice favorites being Praia de São Julião, Praia da Foz do Lizandro, and Praia do Sul. • Nightlife: The nightlife is more subdued than in major cities but still vibrant, especially in summer when the town comes alive. Expect a solid range of relaxed surf bars, live music haunts, and a few clubs that host a range of events in the summer months.  
• Day trips: Ericeira’s close proximity to Lisbon makes the town a top spot for exploring nearby areas. You can get around the Silver Coast very easily, alongside Lisbon, Porto, Mafra, and Sintra. As we’ve mentioned, Coimbra and Aveiro are also close by.

Nazaré, Capital of the Biggest Waves in the World

An hour to the north of Ericeira and an hour and a half from Lisbon, is Nazaré, known for playing host to the biggest waves in the world. Nazaré allure goes far beyond its appeal to big wave surfers, however, and you’ll find a welcoming local population and a calm pace of life here, with the relaxed lifestyle being in stark contrast to the dramatic frenzy of massive waves that can be seen out at sea.  

Nazaré: A Spectacle of Nature

Praia do Norte is the most famous beach in Nazaré. home to colossal, record breaking waves driven by the underwater Nazaré Canyon and creating some of the biggest surfable waves in the world. The largest wave in the world ever surfed is a 86-foot (26.2 meter wave) that was ridden by Austrian-German Sebastian Steudtner at Nazaré on 29 October 2020, earning him the record the Guinness World Record for bigger wave ever surfed.  

Surfing Nazaré is not for beginners and is only for highly experienced, professional big-wave surfers. If you are just starting out, head to other surf spots on the Silver Coast, such as Ericeira, although always be sure to check the conditions carefully.  

Culture and lifestyle in Nazaré

As with many of the towns on the Silver Coast, Nazaré is deeply rooted in its fishing traditions. In Nazaré, fishermen’s wives still wear seven colorful layers of skirts, as well as wooden clogs and the traditional black headscarves. On any given day, you’ll see people drying their catch of fish in the sun on wooden racks along the seafront. This quaint charm undoubtedly is what attracts expats from all over the world. During the big wave season in the winter months, crowds arrive to witness the big wave surfers test their mettle.  

Beyond the mammoth waves, Nazaré has a rich cultural heritage and much more to offer:  

• Miradouro do Sítio: The viewpoint of Sítio, the highest point in the town, is perched atop the cliffs and accessible by funicular, offers stunning panoramic views, and is home to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré
