Local etiquette

• Nightlife starts late in Portugal, so don’t be surprised to see locals head out after 10 pm, with many clubs only opening after 11 pm. 
• Dress codes vary by venue, so check the criteria beforehand. As a rule of thumb, clubs may have a stricter dress code, but beach bars are usually much more casual.

Safety and getting around

• Major cities have night buses, and Uber and Bolt are cheap and convenient to get from A to B. You can also share your trip with a friend for an added safety measure, but in general, both apps are very safe. 
• Portugal is a safe country, ranking in seventh position in the Global Peace Index, but it’s wise to keep an eye on personal belongings in crowded spots and to keep alert during the night out. 
• Portugal is one of the most LGBT-friendly countries in the world, and the LGBTQI+ community will feel greatly welcomed when heading out for a memorable night.
